"Following a one-day presentation and communication skills workshop, the PhD students from the Comprehensive Pneumology Center (CPC) had the great opportunity to join this year’s retreat organized by the CPC Research School to check out their newly acquired skills. The retreat took place in Lenggries at the beautiful Sylvenstein reservoir on April 29 and 30, 2019. During these two days, the students not only presented their own research projects and latest results, they also had the chance to participate in fruitful discussions and chair the sessions of their peers. The CPC Research School team provided very helpful individual assessment of the scientific content. During another round of feedback by an external communications expert, the participants learned how to further improve their presentation style. The program was completed with an introduction to grant writing, which made the students aware of the importance of funding opportunities for a career in science.
Given the setting, it was easy to get in touch with each other and spend some quality time together. Although the weather did not quite play ball, everybody was eager to join the hiking activity. Bundled up in water-proof clothing, the students and trainers enjoyed a walk through the lovely nature of the Alpine foothills. Networking and bonding continued over a great variety of food and drinks.
Overall, this year’s Research School Retreat was a great success with very helpful feedback, fruitful discussions, nice get-togethers, and a lot of fun as well. Thanks to everyone for their contribution and support - also to HELENA, Helmholtz Graduate School Environmental Health, for financially supporting this retreat."
